Abstract

Abstract

The present study deals with spherical crystallization of Meloxicam crystals in order to improve the flow properties, compressibility and enhancement of dissolution characteristics of drug crystals. Spherical agglomerates of Meloxicam are prepared by different techniques. Selection of neutralization technique is based on the better percentage yield, drug content, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Optimization of Meloxicam spherical agglomerate was done. The micromeritic properties, solubility, in vitro drug release of spherical agglomerates were evaluated. Spherical agglomeration enhances the micromeritic and dissolution properties of Meloxicam. Optimized formulation of spherical agglomerate was chosen for the preparation of tablet. Response surface methodology using Box–Behnken was chosen for the optimization of spherical agglomerates. Spherical agglomerate tablet was prepared and evaluated and its dissolution characteristics were compared with conventional as well as marketed product. The tablet prepared from spherical agglomerate leads to a faster release of drug within 2 h when compared with marketed formulation. The drug release mechanism from the tablets was found to be non-Fickian kind of diffusion.
