Randomized Clinical Study on Dissolution of Urinary Catheters and Stents Encrustation by an Ayurvedic Compound

Abstract


Encrustation, a crust or hard coating on the surface of urinary catheter and stents, is developed due to the formation of biofilm. Encrustation causes blockage of urinary catheter and leads to reflux of urine, increases renal pressure and ultimately damages renal parenchyma tissues. Present clinical study was designed to evaluate the dissolution activity of an Ayurvedic compound on catheter and stent encrustation and to study the changes seen in serum calcium, serum sodium, serum creatinine, blood urea, serum potassium, serum phosphorus and serum uric acid. It relieves symptoms like pain, hematuria, burning micturition, urgency, intermittency, etc. Thirty urological catheter patients were registered for the study at Sir Sunderlal Hospital of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. In control group patients, only water and normal diet for three consecutive phases after implantation of urinary catheter and stents were allowed. In preventive group, patients were allowed trial drug 7 days before and after three consecutive phases of placement of urinary catheter and stents. 500-mg capsules were prepared taking equal parts of pashanabheda (Bryophyllum Pinnatum) and varuna (Crataeva nurvala) quath extract and administered two capsules twice daily. Urine out, Urine pH, urine routine and microscopic study, plasma electrolytes and urinary electrolytes, X-ray plain abdomen, USG-abdomen and renal and liver profiles were evaluated in 3-week interval. Statistically, p-value shows significant in increasing urine output and serum Potassium in both preventive and treatment group whereas urine pH decreased to normal 5.5 to 6.5. Serum calcium, serum sodium and urinary sodium also decreased. P-value was also shown highly significant in reducing encrustation in preventive and treatment groups in comparison to control group.
