Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity of Some Medicinal Plants against Most Prevalent Diabetic Wound Pathogens

Abstract


The present research work attempts to evaluate antimicrobial activity of 90% ethanolic extracts of three traditional medicinal plants viz.  Terminalia bellirica, Terminalia chebula, Pyhllanthus emblica. Since ethanol is the best solvent for dissolving antimicrobial compound present as active phytoconstituents in plants, these plants were extracted with ethanol. Each extract was tested for its antimicrobial activity against three most prevalent pathogenic microorganism associated with diabetic wounds, viz. Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC3160), Pseudomonas aeroginosa (MTCC6458), Candida   albicans (MTCC1830). The preliminary antimicrobial activity testing was carried out by using agar well diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentrations of the extract were then determined by using microbroth dilution assay. All these plants extracts exhibited antimicrobial activity against tested pathogens however the ethanolic extract of Terminalia  chebula showed highest antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans with the zone of inhibition 25 mm. Phytochemical analysis of these medicinal plants confirmed the presence of many biological active constituents of plants which might exert better antimicrobial effect in combination for discovery of new effective herbal drugs for the management of chronic diabetic wounds that are difficult to manage due to polymicrobial infection and are one of   most debilitating health issues and major cause of morbidity and mortality in diabetics.
