Parenting style and child rearing practices relate to many aspects of child development from infancy to the end of adolescence such as children’s cognitive development emotional development, school readiness, eating disorders, academic achievement, emotional well-being, delinquency and eating disorders. Hence considering the importance of child rearing practices upon the children, this study is taken up to analyze the knowledge, attitude and practices of child upbringing among mothers. Methodology: Present study was observational study conducted on 200 mothers having children aged 2–5 years, visiting NIUM Hospital, Kottigepalya, Bengaluru, to analyze the knowledge, attitude and practices of child upbringing among mothers. Duration of study was one year. A self-structured schedule designed to get more of quantitative and qualitative information regarding knowledge, attitude and practices of child upbringing was administered to all the mothers fulfilling the inclusion criteria. The data collected in the schedule includes three sections: 1. Demographic profile; 2. Mother’s Knowledge, Attitude and Practices regarding child upbringing; and 3. Mother-Child interaction scale. Results: The maternal education has positive impact on knowledge and relationship between diet and health, knowledge and practice of immunisation, their attitude towards importance of games for child development and mother-child interaction. Mother-child interaction increases if care is provided to the children by their mothers and number of hours spent/day with child. Mother-child interaction has no relationship with mothers’ habitat, religion, socio-economic status, marital status and total number of children. Study concludes that there is direct relationship with socio-economic status and mother’s knowledge of immunization. Interpretation and conclusion: Mother’s education had an impact on knowledge of immunization and its practice and also on knowledge about diet and health. The mother-child interaction was found significantly related with marital status, education level, care provided and time spent with children. In classical literature of USM, Al-Hijamah is of two types; wet cupping or cupping with bloodletting called as Hijamah-bish-shart and dry cupping or cupping without bloodletting termed as Hijamah-bila-shart. The principle of each type of cupping is different, Hijama bil shart works according to the principle of Tanqiye Mawad (i.e., evacuation of morbid matter from the affected area), while as, dry cupping works on the principle of Immale Maawad (i.e., diversion of morbid matter from one site to the other). In USM, the wet cupping is more extensively used and preferred than dry cupping. Recently, the number of followers of this traditional medicine is increasing in the western world. Its prevalence is 45–53.6% in India and is increasing nowadays. Present study was aimed to see the efficacy of satawar and zeera sufaid for improvement in lactation in the patients of oligogalactia. In this prospective randomized controlled trial, all apparently normal mothers delivered a single full term baby weighing not less than 2500 g at birth and between 10 and 90 days of age were included in the study. 60 patients of oligogalactia were divided into two groups. 30 received test drug and 30 patients received placebo. Main outcome measure was reduction in supplement milk. It was observed that before treatment the mean volume of supplemental milk in test group was 273.33±119.43 which reduced to 112.5±195.06 and is significant, while in control group it was 258.33±99.0 which increased and was 360±286.3. It indicates the efficacy of test drug is significant (P <0.001). Disease profile is changing rapidly. Currently, lifestyle disorders are becoming more problem, and policy makers are working on that. It draws major concern because it affects younger working community. Therefore, it would reduce the productivity of the entire nation. It is believed through various studies that free radicals are taking major part of the formation of lifestyle disorders. During the past several years, there has been a growing interest in the medical implications of free radicals. Free radicals can be formed from both, endogenous and exogenous substances due to unhealthy lifestyle. Free radicals cause lifestyle diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, atherosclerosis, hypertension, etc. In recent years, a multitude of studies provide comprehensive evidence that increased production of reactive oxygen species are involved in the development and progression of lifestyle diseases. Hence, Unani system of medicine emphasizes on the maintenance of healthy life through implementing asbab-e-sitta zarooriya (six essential factors) in the life which influence on human body to generate a new state or maintain the persisting state and help in the promotion of health and prevention of disease. A balanced relationship between the six essential factors keeps the humors and the temperament on the right track and due to their imbalance, all mental and somatic diseases occur. Unani system not only addresses the symptoms of lifestyle diseases but also identifies and deals with the underlying causes. Hence, by adoption of an appropriate Unani lifestyle plan, free radical can be avoided or counteracted, and by that, prevent and reduce the degree and severity of the lifestyle diseases, thus ensuring a better quality of life.

Keywords: Free radicals, lifestyle disorders, defense mechanism, Unani medicine

Shiffa MSM, Fahamiya N, Farzana MUZN, et al. Significance of Preventive and Curative Aspect of Unani Medicine in Free Radicals Induced Lifestyle Disorders. Research and Reviews: A Journal of Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. 2016; 3(3): 27–33p.

2016-12-14T23:16:46+00:00Copyright (c) https://med.stmjournals.com/index.php?journal=RRJoUSH&page=article&op=view&path%5B%5D=1224Basoor Labniya (Acne Vulgaris) in Unani Medicine: A Review for its Better Management Strategy2016-12-14T23:17:19+00:00Muzafar D.A. A proper diet is essential from the very early stages of life for proper growth, development and to remain active. The economic transition has changed the way people live. The shift from traditional to modern foods, changing cooking practices, increased intake of processed and ready-to-eat foods and intensive marketing of junk foods have affected people's perception of foods as well as their dietary behaviour. Irrational preference for energy-dense foods and those with high sugar and salt content pose a serious health risk to the people. The increasing number of overweight and obese people in the community and the resulting burden of chronic non-communicable diseases necessitate systematic nutrition educational interventions on a massive scale. Comprehensive instructions by Unani scholars are given on specific food or dietary schedules for different seasons, according to one’s age and to suit one’s individual temperament or Mizāj. It is therefore essential to consider dietary issues and formulate guidelines, which will help in promotion of health and prevention of diseases.

Keywords: Diet, Health promotion, Unani medicine

Atiya Khan, Malik Itrat. It represents an increasing medical condition affecting 15% of couples, and its treatment is stressful, invasive, and costly. The male factor accounts for almost 50% of infertility cases. One of the factors of male infertility is idiopathic oligospermia in which the causative factor is not known. The current scenario of infertility and vitality is more concerned with semen deformity and oligozoospermia. According to WHO, 60–80 millions infertile couples are found worldwide. In India, 10–15% of couples in the productive age group are estimated to be infertile. In those, 25% cases are of male infertility. Despite recent advances in the treatment of male infertility, the problem has not been satisfactorily tackled. Considering the impact of this problem on reproductive health of the nation, there is an urgent need to understand the disease and explore successful treatment of infertility from alternative and complimentary stream of medicine. Unani system of medicine is such an ancient science of health and healing. The modern equivalent term for oligozoospermia in Unani medicine Qillat-e-Huwain-e-Manvia. Eminent Unani physicians have been treating the problem since the time immemorial, not only for improving the numbers of spermatozoa but also the other defects of spermatozoa. In almost every Unani text, the discussion about Qillat-e-Huwain-e-Manvia can be found in detail including the causes, pathology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, line of treatment with a vast range of treatment modalities.
