World Health Organization defines osteoporosis as a “progressive systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and micro architectural deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture”. Menopause is defined as the cessation of ovarian function, resulting in permanent amenorrhoea. Today, the osteoporosis is a major problem which is most remarkably common in women. In Ayurveda, there is no clinical entity, which is described in samhitas like osteoporosis, but this can be discussed under Asthisaushirya and Asthikshaya. Asthisaushirya means porous bones. Hemadri commented on word Saushirya as Samrandhratwa, which means with pores. Ayurveda is the only science which gives prime importance to prevention. In Ayurveda, there are many upakramas (Procedures) like Basti, Lepa, Sechana, etc., which are useful for strengthening of bones.
