SSPE (Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis): A Case Study

Abstract

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is an inflammatory disorder of the brain. Persistent infection with measles virus causes this neurological disorder which is also known as Dawson encephalitis. One case amongst 10000 people affected by measles may fall prey to SSPE. Death may also occur within 1–3 years. Patients usually represent with behavioral changes, visual impairment, myoclonus and pyramidal and extra pyramidal signs. Treatment for SSPE is still undetermined. In this case, a 12 year boy was brought in a vegetative state by his father at the OPD of Govt. Akhandanand Ayurveda College & Hospital, Ahmedabad. He was then admitted in the IPD. The patient was already a diagnosed case of SSPE (Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis). The patient then went under Panchkarma treatment and Palliative therapy.
