A Physiological Review of Asthidhatu
Abstract
Asthidhatu is an entity which is considered as one of the Dhatu among seven. The world ‘Ashti’ is derived from Sanskrit word ‘As-Asyate’ which means to stay. Asthivaha Srotas (channels) plays an important role in metabolism of Asthidhatu, whose principal organs are Medodhatu and Jaghana (pelvic region). Asthidharakala is also concerned with formation of Asthidhatu. Asthidharaka is also known as Purishadharakala. In spite of existence of Panchamahabhaua, Asthidhatu is Prithvi, Agni and Vaya Mahabhuta predominated. Volume of Asthidhatu is non-measurable. In the process of metabolism of Asthidhatu, Danta (teeth) is generated as Updhatu and Nakha(nails), Kesh (hair), Loma (body hair) are produced as Kittansh (excreted part). ‘Dehadharana’ means to maintain the appropriate posture of the body. When Asthidhatu is produced in excellence condition individuals known as Asthisara Purusha. Any kind of deviation in Asthidhatu (waning or increment) leads to pathogenesis. It is an important entity for sustenance of the life. It is therefore, needed to protect this Dhatu by every possible measure.
