Hypothesis of Ayurvedic Management of Acute Abdominal Illness Gastroparesis vis-à-vis Vilambika
Abstract
Gastroparesis is characterised by delaying of gastric emptying, the disease is having close resemblance with Vilambika first described by Acharya Sushruta. The disease may be result of local or systemic cause, requires prompt treatment, it may even precipitate as pseudo cardiac emergency. The disease is caused by derangement in action of Agni-Pitta (digestion and metabolism) and Vayu (gastric motility), which produces hypo-motility that manifests as gastroparesis. The disease is commonly observed in patient suffering from cancer, neuropathic changes in type I DM, multiple sclerosis and emotional changes which can be managed by ayurvedic medicines which are time tested, safe and effective. Regulation of Agni and normal movement of Vayu has been identified as primary objective of treatment, which improves gastric motility and relieves symptoms.
