Α Review on a Potential Herb: Ixora coccinea Linn
Abstract
The plant Ixora coccinea (Rubiaceae) is a commonly available shrub throughout India. The plant has been documented of use not only in Ayurveda, but also in various folk system of medicine in India and Sri Lanka. The present article is an effort to collect information regarding its traditional use, phytochemical and pharmacological updates. The review reveals a wide variety of phytoconstituents that have been isolated, such as lupeol, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, sitosterol, ixoratanninA2, procyanidin A2, cinnamotannin B-1 and the flavones-3 olrhamnosides namely kaempferol-7-o-α-1-rhamnoside, kaempferol-3-o-α-1-rhamnopyranoside, and kaempferol-3-0-α-1-dirhamnoside, are responsible for various pharmacological activities like antimicrobial, wound healing, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-asthmatic, anti-diarrhoeal and many other such medicinal properties. For the past few years, extensive research has been done to verify its therapeutic activities and pharmacology of its extracts. These research works have proved Ixora coccinea as an important medicinal plant and there is a need to create awareness regarding the medicinal values of the plant so that it can be used for the welfare of mankind.
