Comparative Evaluation of In Vitro Antioxidant Activity of Bark, Flowers and Fruit Extracts of Pongamia pinnata
Abstract
In Indian history, the use of herbal remedies for various diseases has proved its efficacy. Free radicals are the main cause of disease such as diabetes, hypertension, inflammation, etc. The various parts of plant Pongamia pinnata possess good antioxidant activities. The objective of the study was to determine free radical scavenging activity of various plant parts by in vitro free radical scavenging assay such as DPPH assay, ABTS radical decolorization cation assay, TBA assay and scavenging of hydrogen peroxide radical. The assay was done using various concentrations of 200, 100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25 using the ascorbic acid as standard. Comparing the IC50 values of various extracts, it was found that bark extracts showed almost similar activity of ascorbic acid and the flowers and fruits have reasonably higher values as compared to standard. Based on these results, the extracts of various plant parts possess good antioxidant activities.
