Abstract
Abstract
Sapindus mukorossi also known as reetha is well known herb in ancient Ayurveda. The fruits of this herb contain saponins which showed excellent spermicidal activity in vitro and in vivo animal experiments. The formulation in the form of cream was prepared for human application. The safety and tolerability pilot clinical study was organized. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the contraceptive safety and efficacy of 2.5% cream when used intravaginally before coitus. The women volunteers were instructed to use 2.5% CONSAP cream in loading dose of 3 gm, 5–7 min before coitus and present herself for post coital test the next morning. The study was conducted on twenty seven women volunteers at two centers. The volunteers were examined within 12 h of coitus. The post coital test showed immobile spermatozoa in vaginal and endocervical aspirates. This pilot study clearly showed that CONSAP cream prepared from Sapindus Mukorossi, when used properly in indicated quantity can act as contraceptive without side effect.
