Abstract

Osteoporosis has become a public health problem worldwide. In Osteoporosis the bone loses their peak bone mass and becomes weak, fragile and susceptible to fractures at minimum stress. Osteoporosis can be compared with Asthikshaya. Asthis and vata are having direct relationship with each other and reciprocal to each other i.e., if vata increases then it will decrease the bone mass. Basti is supposed to be best treatment for balancing vata to check the process of resorption in the bones. To find a safe and permanent solution to the problem this research work was carried out. Tikatadi ksheer basti is based on the principle of bastayah ksheersarpishi tiktakoupahitani cha, and Lakshadi Guggulu is based on the principle of swayonivardhan dravyopayogah pratikarah. Tiktadi oil Matra Basti was given for balancing Vata Dosha. Study was conducted on 45 patients diagnosed (with the help of DEXA-Scan) of osteoporosis/Asthi kshaya which were randomly divided into three groups A, B and C. In Group A tab. Lakshadi Guggulu was given for 21 days in the dose of 1gm twice daily with milk and ghrit. In Group B Tiktadi oil Matra Basti and Lakshadi Guggulu was administered for 21 days and in Group C Lakshadi Guggulu was given for 21 days along with Tikatadi ksheer basti (420 ml) for 21 days. The Group C i.e. of combined therapy was most effective followed by Group B of Matra Basti and Group A of only Lakshadi Guggulu tablet, respectively in the management of Asthikshaya/Osteoporosis.
