Agrawal Monika, Byadgi P S, Dwibedy B.K

Abstract

Skin is the vast organ of the body. It is also one of the five 'Gyanendriyas' as described in Ayurveda, which is responsible for the perception of touch. It also performs functions such as protection of the body against physical, chemical, mechanical and biological injuries, thermoregulation etc. The protective ability however may not always be able to deal with the environmental stimulus and this leads to the production of skin diseases. Tvaka Daha or Sense of heat is the cardinal feature of almost all of the skin diseases. In spite of major development in the field of treatment, modern dermatologists are prescribing antihistamines, corticosteroids etc. in prolonged use. They are either inadequately effective or are associated with lots of side effects. Therefore the search for better, safe, and effective drug continues.
