Spectrophotometric Method for the Estimation of Levosulpiride in Bulk Drug and Formulations

Shanmugam S, Babu R, Ravichandran V

Abstract

Levosulpiride having D2-dopamine receptor antagonistic activity gives ant depressive and antiulcer effect. There are three new simple accurate, rapid, economical and precise procedures for spectrophotometric estimation of Levosulpiride in bulk and pharmaceutical formulation. Levosulpiride was estimated at 291.5 nm in 0.1 N NaOH, 290 nm in 0.1 N HCl and 292.5 nm in 6.8 phosphate buffer. Linearity range was found to be 10–50 µg/mL in all the three methods. The molar absorptivity was found to be 2.869 × 103/mol−1cm−1 in 0.1 N NaOH, 3.120 × 103/mol−1cm−1 in 0.1 N HCl and 3.135 × 103/mol−1cm−1 in 6.8 phosphate buffer. The methods were validated and can be successfully applied to estimate Levosulpiride in pharmaceutical dosage forms.
