Research Insight: Drug Formulation, Development and Production

Priyanka Aswal

Abstract

Formulation studies involve developing a preparation of the drug which is both stable and acceptable to the patient. For orally taken drugs, this customarily involves incorporating the drug into a tablet or a capsule. It is paramount to appreciate that a tablet contains a variety of other substances apart from the drug itself, and studies have to be carried out to ascertain that the drug is compatible with these other substances. Developing an incipient drug and taking it to market is a long and costly process. The industry focus is shifted toward developing the right drug for the right patient in the shortest time at the least cost. Emerging trend in pharma industry is to outsource clinical tribulations to emerging markets. The clinical tribulation is the most expensive stage of drug development and accounts for about sixty per cent of total costs. Paper underscores India’s major strengths in clinical tribulations. India has tremendous potentials to become ultimate destination for drug development.
