Abstract

Sushruta who lived about 1500–1000 B.C. in India was much ahead of his time in expounding and practicing the surgical principles of which the truth of many is only being realized now. He is considered as the pioneer in many fields. Suturing is one among his innumerable and valuable contributions. Basics of suturing which he described years back are still followed. His contribution in suturing technique is reviewed here. Literature survey is the basis of this study. Sushruta Samhita, the treatise compiled by Sushruta, various commentaries on it by different authors and other related literature are used as primary sources.
