Rationale behind Scope of Hepato-Protective Drugs in the Treatment of Mukhdushika (Acne Vulgaris)

Abstract

Among the skin diseases, mukhadushika is the most commonly observed ailment in day-to-day life having latent impact on one’s psychological behavior. Mukhdushika is mentioned in the context of kshudraroga by almost all major lexicons of Ayurveda with its brief pathogenesis. In contemporary medicine mukhdushika can be correlated with acne vulgaris which is predominant in puberty due to hormonal changes. Excess androgen leads to over secretion of sebum from sebaceous glands which are mainly located at face, back and upper part of chest. Since androgen is metabolized in liver, hepato-protective drugs will play a key role in controlling the excess androgen thereby preventing the pathology of acnes. This can be further strengthened by evaluating Ayurvedic principles in the treatment of mukhdushika.
