Role of Viruddha Chesta in the Development of Amavata

Abstract

Viruddha chesta indicates all those activities of the body which have an adverse effect on the normal physiology of body. When normal physiology of body is disturbed, the vitiation of agni takes place. This vitiated agni leads to the production of ama. Viruddha chesta on other hand also causes vitiation of vata. When these factors combine together (ama & vata) produce Amavata. So, Amavata has been named because it develops due to conglomeration of ama and vata. Amavata is a group of various types of joint disorders as rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, ankylosing spondylitis and reactive arthritis, etc. According to Ayurveda ama plays an important role in the pathogenesis of this disease, which is formed mainly due to decrease in digestive power (mandagni). Acharya Madhava has described various types of nidanas responsible for the development of Amavata and viruddha chesta is one of them which plays one of the most crucial point in today’s era. Viruddha chesta causes vitiation in agni causing vitiation in doshas and vice versa.
