Abstract

Rasaushadhis are an important part of Ayurvedic treatment. These medicines are one of the tool by which dreadful diseases are eradicated. Genuine and standard medicine can only serve this purpose. Standardization should most preferably be checked for the material which is available in varieties. Sauratri is a drug included in the group of Uparas varga. There are varieties of samples of sauratri available in the market and being used by traditional Ayurvedic physicians. The assessment of these samples by using a well-designed Performa which was the outcome of the review of the ancient and modern literature proved useful to define standards for sauratri. The standard should most preferably be checked for the material which is available in varieties. Incorrect substance may not deliver expected results, rather can prove hazardous. Thus the quality of substance should be cleared with priority. The ancient way of raw material standardization of rasadravyas is through narration of grahyagrahatya i.e. acceptation and rejection criteria and these criteria for every metals and minerals are quoted in most of Rasashastra texts. For this assessment we had collected 10 samples from different places of India and labeled them as 1 to10. According to ancient methods like Shabd, Sparsh, Rupa, Ras, Gandh and modern methods like common form, habit, colour, diaphaneity, cleavage, fracture, hardness, pH, solubility XRD, XRF etc., we decided standard and quality of different samples of Saurashtri.
