Dengue vis-à-vis Paakal Sannipatik Jwara: A Review

Abstract

Dengue is vector borne viral haemorrhagic fever having its epidemic in present time. The disease is having resemblance to Paakal Sannipat Jwara described by Acharya Bhavmishra (18th century). The disease being viral in origin there is no precise medicine and use of antipyretic and antibiotics has very limited role in controlling illness or its complication, the treatment principle adopted in the disease is symptomatic management. Use of antipyretics (esp. salicylates) has been found to produce fatal complications like Raye’s syndrome. Paakal Sannipat Jwara is Tridoshaja Jwara having involvement of joint swelling & pain with possibility of bleeding complications. In this paper review of Paakal Sannipat Jwara with dengue fever and management principles according to Ayurveda has been described. It is observed that ayurvedic medicines has proved its safety and efficacy, this paper is hypothesis for management for dengue haemorrhagic fever, if scientific studies are carried out on the basis described.
