Quantitative Analysis of Eucalyptus Umbellata Essential Oil Extracts from Microwave Assisted Extraction Through GC-MS
Abstract
Microwave assisted extraction was green technology for extraction of essential oil from natural plants and herbs. Microwave extraction extracted the eucalyptus essential oil from eucalyptus umbellata leaves using microwave heating at atmospheric pressure. The two operating parameters involved in MAE, which was extraction time and microwave power. The extracted oil was analyzed through the gas chromatograph – mass spectrometer, which was used for investigating the composition of eucalyptus umbellata essential oil. It is also determine α-pinene and cineole percentage with respect to extraction time and microwave power. The optimum percentage of total extracted yield 0.49% (w/w), cineole 0.112% (w/w) and α-pinene 0.16% (w/w) is obtained with a 130 min extraction time at 1000 W microwave power in MAE. The GC-MS results show that area percentage of cineole and α-pinene in extracting yield, 22.8% and 32.4% respectively. This study concluded that the yield and composition of eucalyptus essential oil is directly proportional to the microwave power.
