A Review of Phytochemistry and Biological Activities of Ruellia prostrata
Abstract
Ruellia genus represents one of the highest numbers of texa and having greater variety of plants especially in floral variety and inflorescences pattern. Several species of rullea have decorative value because of their attractive large colorful flowers. Ruellia species have been utilized in folkloric medicine for the treatment of various disorders such as renal infections, gonorrhea, syphilis, anti-diabetic etc. Ruellia prostrata is a well-known weed which is an annual to perennial herb, up to 25–40 cm tall scattered in throughout India. Traditionally the plant is widely used as a powerful diuretic, wound healing and hypoglycemic agent. The major active phytoconstituents present in the plant are Flavanoids, sterols and mucilage. In this review article the various major active phytoconstituents and pharmacological activity of the plant and the genus rullea is being discussed.
