Comparative Study of Open and Closed Fistulectomy for Fistula in ano

The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness, hospital stay, morbidity, post-operative pain and wound discharge of the procedure between open and primary closure method of fistulectomy. 25 patients underwent open fistulectomy and 25 patients underwent primary closure, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of study. Post-operative assessment of pain, Delayed wound healing, recurrence, Urinary retention, Follow up noted. Mean hospital stay was of 8 days in primary closure group and 15 days in open group. Mean duration of healing of fistula was 8–10 day in primary closure and 21–30 days in open group. There was significant difference in pain on 1st, 2nd and 3rd post-operative day in both groups. Conclusion of the study showed that, primary closure method of fistulectomy is safe, feasible and equally effective. Post-operative pain is much less, early discharge from the hospital, healing of wound is faster, decreased morbidity, as compared to open method of fistulectomy.
