Understanding Migraine (Shaqeeqah) in Unani Perspective: An Overview
Abstract
Shaqeeqah is a type of headache which occurs on one side of the head. Its incidence increases from second decade, peaks at third decade and then gradually shows decline. It affects females more than males. According to Unani classical literature, Shaqeeqah is a disease which occurs either due to imtela (congestion) of akhlat (humours) or due to vapours which are produced from hot humours. Accordingly, Shaqeeqah has been categorised as Shaqeeqah Haar (Hot migraine), Shaqeeqah Barid (Cold migraine) and Shaqeeqah due to hot vapours. Depending upon the cause, each type is treated accordingly. This paper is an attempt to understand the disease purely in Unani perspective in various aspects viz., etiology, pathogenesis, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, line of treatment and treatment.
