Efficacy of poste mulsari (Mimusops elengi Bark) and shibe yamani (Potash Alum) in Pruritus Vulva Associated with Vaginal Discharge: A Randomized Standard Controlled Study
Abstract
Itching is the single most frequent presenting symptom, occurring in 70% of patients consulting a clinic for vulvar disease. Its most common cause is vaginal discharge. The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of poste mulsari (bark of Mimusops elengi) and shibe yamani (potash alum) in the management of pruritus vulvae with vaginal discharge. In this prospective randomized standard controlled clinical trial conducted at the National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, 40 patients of pruritus vulvae with vaginal discharge were included. Poste mulsari orally and shibe yamani locally was given to the test group for three weeks and combination of Azithromycin, Fluconazole and Secnidazole orally in a single dose and Miconazole locally for one week was given to the control group. Patients were re-evaluated after treatment. Primary outcome was reduction in 5D itch score and vaginal discharge. Both the groups were similar at baseline. 5D itch score (P<0.001) and vaginal discharge per speculum (P<0.05) were reduced significantly in the test group as compared to control group. Changes in vaginal pH (P=0.950), Whiff test (P=0.490), wet mount with normal saline (P=0.490) and wet mount with KOH (P=0.290) was not significant. The test drugs poste mulsari and shibe yamani were more effective than control drug in reducing pruritus vulvae and vaginal discharge as well as equally effective in vaginal pH, Whiff test, and wet mount.
